A group of popular media sources and journalists is launching an international campaign demanding that the government of President Santos give guarantees for the exercise of activities of the press in Colombia. They ask that due process is done in the case of the correspondent from the News Agency Colombia Informa, Sergio Segura, and that the exercise of the human right to freedom of expression be guaranteed. In response to the detention of journalist Sergio Segura we ask for guarantees from the Colombian government

We, the signatories below, workers in the press, communicators from all over the world, express our worry with the detention of Colombian journalist Sergio Segura, July 8th at 6 AM, one of 14 other arrest warrants carried out by the justice in Colombia involving social, student, and feminist leaders in the investigations of the bombings in Bogotá on July 2.

The detention of Segura and the fact that his journalistic archive was seized, gives a context of the persecutions and the lack of guarantees for the exercise of journalism and communications. The Foundation for the Freedom of the Press (FLIP) of Colombia documented 164 cases of journalists who were victims of persecution and human rights violations in 2014, of whom 6 were incarcerated. Already in 2015 the reports of the violation to the freedom of the press have accumulated to 84 denouncements.

Sergio Segura has a bachelor’s degree in Social Communication and has worked as a correspondent at Colombia Informa. Recently, due to his specialization in the areas of conflict and peace, he was asked to present at the National University of Colombia in a forum about news media and the conflict.

The signatories below express our worry that Segura was detained for extrajudicial political motives related to his work as a journalist and his denouncements of human rights violations. We ask for the Colombian government to guarantee the respect of the legal requests and grant freedom to the detained people. 

Members of the news agency Colombia Informa received death threats from paramilitary groups in 2014, similarly to medias like Telesur. If the detention of Segura were linked to his journalistic coverage of subjects of the armed conflict and peace, this would leave a frightening precedent for the freedom of press in Colombia.

If so, it would infringe on the freedom of expression in Colombia, causing intimidation towards independent voices who speak about things as sensitive as the armed conflict and it would also obstruct the defense of human rights.

For this reason, we reiterate our request so that the legal due process is guaranteed and does not convert into a media show without any foundation in truth. We ask for guarantees for the exercise of the activities of the press for communicators and journalists in all of Colombia and we call for international solidarity so that the due process is granted and the full exercise to the human right of freedom of expression is guaranteed.
