The various social organizations that comprise the group Convergence for Peace -Convergencia por la Paz– are projecting massive demonstrations on April 9.

The marches that are expected to ensue throughout the nation’s main cities have the following objectives: to demand that the government enact a bilateral ceasefire and lend their support to the discussion table with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia -FARC- in La Habana, just as the public discussion table begins with the National Liberation Army -ELN-. Even so, the National Day of Memory and Solidarity with Victims will be commemorated, as established by Law 1448 in 2011.

The Convergence for Peace is the place where practically the entirety of the nation’s popular expressions will join together, if taking into account the social sectors and peasants who comprise the Popular Summit of Farmers, Peasants, and Ethnic Groups -Cumbre Agraria, Campesina, Étnica y Popular– the political groups that encourage the Broad Front –Frente Amplio– and the intellectuals and special ecclesiastical sectors that invigorate the Social Cry for Peace –Clamor Social por la Paz– as do many urban groups. These social and political groups, which all have similar objectives for the resolution of the armed conflict, demand that the president Juan Manuel Santos open up different avenues of participation within communities, and an end to the repression of social protest as part of peace processes.

On April 9 it is expected that a multitude of different expressions will congregate throughout the nation’s main cities. Coordination meetings have already begun in cities like Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, and Bucaramanga, among others. In the capital, mayor Gustavo Petro will support the planned demonstrations, and has already programmed a large concert for the end of the day.

With this national day of mobilization we can expect greater pressure and visibility toward an alternative to those peace proposals that have been laid out by the government. The movement has been growing in strength in diverse sectors, and can be watched as it completes its objective of gaining visibility and size.
